The recent shorter twentieth season may have had fewer episodes due to the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes but that does not mean it was short on the drama!
Even with fewer appearances, Dr Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) still had a major storyline as she did covert research into Alzheimer's disease, but she and her co-conspirators faced a huge stumbling block in the final episodes: Dr Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen).
So, with the new season in mind, what lies ahead for Grey's Anatomy season 21 and when can we expect it?
Grey's Anatomy season 21 will air in the US on ABC and Hulu in Fall 2024.
We can likely expect the episodes to premiere in September or October 2024 in line with the show's usual transmission pattern.
The series won't be impacted by industry strikes this time around so we should expect a full-length season.
The following Grey's Anatomy main cast members are expected to return next season.
The main cast will see two departures in the next season. Actor Jake Borelli will return for an exit storyline for long-running character Dr Levi Schmitt, while actress Midori Francis will also be leaving the show following an exit storyline for Dr Mika Yasuda, making her the first of the new generation of interns to leave the series. Both are expected to appear in multiple episodes before they leave next season.
Deadline has also reported that a cost-cutting move will likely see episodic appearances for series veterans reduced in a bid to lower costs, which appears to be the reason for Borelli's exit too.
Additionally, we can likely expect returns for recurring characters including Scott Speedman as Dr Nick Marsh, Debbie Allen as Dr Catherine Fox, Jaicy Elliot as Dr Taryn Helm, Natalie Morales as Dr Monica Beltran, and Jason George as Dr Ben Warren.
According to Deadline, it is expected that George will return to a more prominent role in the show as Ben following the end of the spin-off series Station 19 and Dr Warren's renewed interest in medicine. It remains to be seen if he will be a series regular or recurring character, but Ben is still very much Bailey's loving husband.
Well, there are a number of plot points to continue following the finale of season 20.
Dr Catherine Fox went on a firing spree following multiple clashes, cutting ties with Dr Meredith Grey over her secret Alzheimer's research and then with Meredith's accomplices Dr Amelia Shepherd and Dr Teddy Altman - the latter of whom was fired as Chief of Surgery. Dr Owen Hunt was also fired when he stood up for Teddy when Catherine tried to drop her from a trauma response team to a wildfire.
Meanwhile, the interns were also in a mutiny over the harsh decision made by Dr Fox against Dr Lucas Adams, which did not seem to bother Dr Fox until she faced the potential resignation of Dr Miranda Bailey!
Elsewhere, Dr Richard Webber had also been questioning his career after having a major shaky period following the near-breaking of his sobriety.
Dr Levi Schmitt also considered his career future as he aimed to get on a pediatric medicine fellowship and we know his exit is imminent...
Plus, Dr Jo Wilson discovered she was pregnant with Dr Atticus 'Link' Lincoln's baby - will the pair's family continue to run smoothly?
Finally, romance is in the air for divorc Dr Winston Ndugu and newcomer Dr Monica Beltran, while Dr Mika Yasuda and Dr Jules Millin shared a near-kiss. Where will things go next? Well, given Yasuda's coming exit, it can't be good...

Did Meredith Grey and McDreamy share the greatest Shonda Rhimescreated romance of all time? Does any couple burn for each other more than Bridgertons Daphne and her Duke of Hastings? Or were Scandals Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant the ultimate couple goals? On a special episode of Still Watching, hosts Hillary Busis, Richard Lawson, and Chris Murphy discuss and debate which Shondaland romance represented the greatest love of all.
In the wake of #Polin on Bridgerton, Still Watching thought it was the perfect time to revisit the many romantic relationships that originated on Rhimes-produced programs like Greys Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, and Bridgerton. Rhimes has a knack for drawing compelling and sometimes incredibly frustrating romantic relationships that have broken into the cultural zeitgeist.
While all three agree on Rhimess undeniable influence, finding consensus on which Shondaland couple most stands the test of time is a bit trickier. Busis opened the debate with a curveballchoosing Greys Anatomy BFFs Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang, played by Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh, as the greatest love story Rhimes ever told. Its not technically a romantic relationship, Busis admits. But I think it was the heart and soul of Greys Anatomy for its first 10 years. Murphy was quick to object on technical groundsthey were friends, not loversbut agreed with Busis that their relationship represented the heart of the show.
Lawson, meanwhile, went all in on How to Get Away With Murder, naming groundbreaking gay couple Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) as the greatest and perhaps steamiest Rhimes romance of all. There was a lot of sex on that show, and they had the most sex, said Lawson. The fact that this network drama was giving that space to a gay couple, I really dont think had happened on television.
Still Watching listeners highlighted candidates from Private Practice and Bridgerton. Murphy, however, went for a classic: Scandals Vermont-loving Olivia and Fitz, played by Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn. Murphy defends his choice by mentioning their staying power in the public consciousness, noting that even six years after Scandals series finale, these two still regularly go viral just because theyre in a room together. Ever the contrarian, Busis maintains that Olivia and Jake (Scott Foley) were ultimately the better Scandal coupleeven though he was working for a spy agency run by Olivias father that attempted to overthrow the US government. Well, all is fair in love and war.

Why Meredith and Cristina Beat Meredith and Derek on 'Grey's Anatomy' - Vanity Fair
Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 fans will be thrilled by the latest news surrounding Jason George, a veteran of both ABC TV shows. The actor who plays the doctor-turned-firefighter Ben Warren will reportedly return to Grey's Anatomy following the conclusion of its spinoff, Station 19.
According to Deadline, talks are currently ongoing between George and ABC. No deal is yet in place, and in what capacity he will return is still unclear, though George is expected to rejoin Grey's Anatomy as a series regular. The actor first appeared as Ben Warren in Season 6 and was a series regular from Season 12 on the long-running hit medical drama before leaving to headline the Station 19 spinoff series in 2018. Rumors of George's return first surfaced in January. Showrunner Meg Martinis teased in March that the way story arcs ended for Grey's Anatomy characters, including George's Ben, who had crossed over to Station 19, would influence a potential return.
Millie Bobby Brown is usually linked to the success of Stranger Things. But many fans don't know about her performance in a hit medical drama.
George recently discussed the possible return to Grey's Anatomy, implying Ben had unfinished business with his wife on the show, Chandra Wilson's Miranda Bailey. "I like to think that there's still a Ben-Bailey, or Benley, story to tell. I think that's a possibility. There may be conversations," he teased. The actor also revealed his sadness about the cancelation of Station 19 but was grateful its writers had proper notice, allowing them to craft a befitting finale.
"It's incredibly tough because it feels like we have so many more years in us," George said. "Knowing that this was our last season, the writers got to write an ending that landed that plane the way it was supposed to land. We got to write a beautiful ending, and we also got to schedule the whole thing and deal with each other knowing that this is going to be goodbye as a family every day."
Shane Ross made a strong impression as soon as he walked into Grey Sloane. But, why did this fan favourite character decide to call it quits?
The news of George's potential return comes after Grey'sAnatomy recently announced the imminent departure of two beloved cast members. Series regular Jake Borelli, who plays Levi Schmitt, will leave after being a part of the show for seven years. Midori Francis, who portrays Mika Yasuda, will also depart the series. Borelli and Francis will appear in Season 21 to wrap up the storylines of their respective characters.
