Ellen Pompeo Insists on Staying ‘Involved’ in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ – Closer Weekly

Ellen Pompeo continues to rake in the cash as a consultant (and occasional guest star) for Greys Anatomy with very little screen time required as part of her deal and the other cast members are increasingly resentful, sources exclusively tell Closer.

After starring in the medical drama series full-time since the show premiered in 2005, the 54-year-old scaled back during the shows last two seasons. However, she remains an executive producer on the show and continues her signature voiceovers.

The problem continues to be Ellens insistence on staying heavily involved in the series, mostly off camera but occasionally in jarring and isolated guest appearances that only pull focus from the younger actors who are doing the heavy lifting and putting in the 16-hour workdays to actually make this drama work, an insider reveals.

When Greys debuted in 2005, Ellen starred alongside Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T. R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey. However, most of the original cast moved on, and new doctors have been in and out of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Give them some breathing room and the show can take flight again, the source says of the newer cast members. Instead, you have Ellen hanging around picking at the carcass of this franchise while its still profitable. Its not a good look but what can you do?

At her peak, Ellen made a stunning $575,000 per episode, and it was estimated that she brought in about $20 million or more per season.

Ellen helped make this into a franchise but unlike virtually everybody else on the show, she hasnt cultivated many opportunities outside of the Greys universe, the source notes. She wasnt off making movies or TV pilots during her hiatus, she was vacationing and spending time with her family.

The source adds, Her entire career is built around this show, so even when she left two years ago, she never really quit. Its her obsession, her lifes work. And her failure to do any other significant movie or TV work only incentivizes her to keep holding on to the biggest hit shes ever been involved in.

According to the insider, Ellens team should have encouraged her to diversify her acting rsum. They add, Pre-Greys, Ellen even had a promising movie career. Everybody loved her in Old School in 2003 when she held her own opposite Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell. But once she plugged into Greys and it became this massive hit, there was no going back and Ellen got super rich off it. But how about giving the younger actors a real chance and maybe going off and proving you can make hits on your own steam?

Jason George to Return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ After ‘Station 19 Ending – Just Jared

Jason George is likely going to return to Greys Anatomy for the upcoming 21st season!

The actor joined the show back in season six as Ben Warren and eventually was promoted to series regular for seasons 12-14. Jason then left the show and joined spin-off series Station 19 as a lead.

Now that Station 19 is over, its being reported that Jasons return to Greys is imminent.

Deadline reports that there is no deal in place and the exact capacity in which George would return to Greys Anatomy is unclear but talks are ongoing, and the intent is to have him back on the show.

It has been confirmed that two actors are leaving Greys in the upcoming season, but plenty others are expected to be back.

Is There A Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Release Date? – The Mary Sue

One of the longestrunning dramas currently on TV, few shows can boast of a fanbase as devoted as Greys Anatomy. The show concluded its 20th season on May 30 after already being renewed for a 21st season on April 2.

Fans scouring the internet to look for a potential release date for season 21 will be disappointed to know that a concrete date hasnt been announced as of yet. This is completely normal, though, as season 20 just ended, and it would be difficult for the studio to come up with a release date for the next season already. In terms of an estimated release window, Greys Anatomy is a part of ABCs 2024/25 schedule, and interested viewers will likely get to lay their eyes on the new season in fall 2025.

There have been some noteworthy changes to the 21st season: The budget has been decreased, the show will air on Thursdays at 10 p.m. instead of 9 p.m., and most importantly, it will have the regular number of episodes (an exact number hasnt been specified yet). The 20th season only had 10 episodes because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Since season 2, the show has had at least 17 episodes in every season.

There will be some decision-making involved from the creators with regard to the cast of Greys Anatomy season 21, since multiple actors are on expiring contracts: Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone, Kim Raver, and Kevin McKidd. The shows heartbeat, Ellen Pompeo, hasnt confirmed a return to the show since exiting in season 19. At this stage, it looks like she will only be involved in the capacity of providing episode voiceovers.

Greys Anatomy season 21 will be available live on TV on ABC once the season premieres. In case fans miss the live telecast, they can catch the episode the next day on the ABC app or ABC.com. In December 2023, news broke that Station 19 would be ending with the upcoming Season 7. As George and the other cast members complete their final season, fans are wondering if Warren will continue to appear on Greys Anatomy as Baileys husband or if he would even come back full time. Is Ben Warren coming back to Greys Anatomy? Its certainly possible! In addition to Bailey, Ben has long-standing friendships with several doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, so theres plenty of ways he could stay in the Greys Anatomy/Station 19 universe even after the firefighter drama ends.

While speaking to Deadline, new showrunner Meg Marinis discussed the characters future and the possibility of his return to Greys Anatomy as a series regular. I dont want to answer that because I dont want to answer anything aboutStation 19 that Im not only fully aware of, she said, adding of Ben and Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato): How they end their stories will help me determine whether or not I will be seeing those characters on Greys.

George, who has played Ben since Season 1 of Station 19, also told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Station 19s series finale that he is very much open to returning to Greys Anatomy. I like to think that theres still a Ben-Bailey, or Benley, story to tell, he said. He continued, I think thats a possibility. There may be conversations.

Carina is an attending OB/GYN who started as a recurring character on Greys Anatomy before switching over to Station 19 in Season 3; she was later promoted to a series regular in Season 4. She is married to former Station 19 captain Maya Bishop (played by Danielle Savre).

While the executive couldnt share if Ben and Carina will for sure join the show again, she did promise that Ben will cross over during Station 19s final season. What I can tell you is that the Bailey and Ben relationship will continue to cross over. Those two actors love crossing over and its very important to them that what they do over here and what they do over there, that its one symbiotic thing, she said. She added of Carina: Well definitely see [her] on Greysat one point.

Station 19 star Jaina Lee Ortiz, who plays Andrea Andy Herrera, previously teased a crazy crossover towards the end of the season. I have a feeling theres going to be a major crossover towards the end of the season. And this character has never visitedGreys Anatomy in this way, she told TV Insider.Of the crossover episode in question, Marinis hinted: We like to share catastrophes, thats what Im saying. This information makes us wonder if perhaps a Station 19 character will be killed off or require life-saving medical care from the doctors at GSM. The show has killed off major characters before (rip Dean) and the series finale is certainly cause for a dramatic plot twist, so its possible.

While we dont know for sure who Ortiz is referring to is, Ben and Carina are most likely in the clear since they might have a future on Greys Anatomy. Carinas return to the series could even leave the door open for some cameos from Maya!

Although we dont know for sure, some fans have theories that Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) might be getting her own spin-off. The former Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Season 19 to take a job in Chicago. The departure came amid relationship struggles with husband Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) and the pair officially split ahead of her move.

McCreary reprised her role for a special guest appearance in the penultimate episode of Season 20, titled Carry Your Heart. During the episode, she and Winston got closure and the latter officially signed the divorce papers. McCreary also offered fan-favorite intern Dr. Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) a job as a a second-year cardio intern after the Grey Sloan board recommended he repeat his intern year. Lucas, who is the nephew of the late Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) admitted that he had always considered neurosurgery as a speciality, to which Maggie responded: Why? Because youre a Shepherd? She then encouraged him to take the job and Lucas later told fellow intern Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd) that he was considering it.

Following Maggies grand return, one fan commented on the shows Facebook post: Im wondering if they are setting up a spin off with Maggie after she offered the intern a position in Chicago. While McCreary told Deadline after her exit that the door is certainly open when it comes to returning to the show, its unlikely that shell get her own spin-off. In the same interview, the actress shared that she is looking forward to exploring new opportunities. Next for me is a little bit of rest and then seeking out opportunities to play some different characters using all of the tools and experiences Ive had and collaboration and world-building, building Maggies world out on Greys, she said.

Thats not to say that another Greys spin-off is out of the question, though. While speaking to Deadline in February 2024, Disney Television Group PresidentCraig Erwich revealed that he is open to expanding the Greys universe, which includes now-cancelled spin-offs Private Practice, which was carried over by Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh)and Station 19, featuring Greys Ben Warren (Jason George).Were always open to new and different iterations on any of our most key franchises and our most realized shows, whichGreys is one of them, he told the outlet.

Fans have several other ideas for spin-offs if Maggie doesnt earn her own offshoot. In a Reddit thread, one diehard fan pitched a prequel series centered on a young Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr) and surgical legend Ellis Grey, the late mother of Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). I feel like that would be something Id binge watch. It can be set in a certain time like the 70s/80s and have good plot lines, the fan wrote. Another fan chimed in: Thats interesting and it would be amazing to see Ellis in her prime! A third fan agreed, writing: Right! I feel like wed be able to see the best surgeon at work and they can show how she used to video all her surgeries and why she kept so many personal diaries with surgery secrets too! In a separate thread, one fan advocated for a spin-off following the beloved Dr. Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) as she runs her hospital in Switzerland or a series on fellow alum Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), who know lives in New York. Definitely a spin off following Cristina. Super unpopular but I also wouldnt mind a show around Callie in New York, they wrote.

Meredith Grey’s 11 Love Interests in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, Ranked – Collider

Grey's Anatomy's Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) has experienced a lot in the 20 seasons that the show has been on air. Her journey started as a humble surgical intern who only wanted to follow in the footsteps of her mother Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). She was able to achieve her goals and more thanks to the loyal band of friends and family around her. In addition, Meredith Grey's boyfriends were also a key fixture of the show, with viewers waiting to see which one she'd end up with.

Starting the show with a love affair with soulmate Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith learns the hard way that a happily ever after might not be what she expected. From awkward one-night stands to grand declarations of romance, Meredith is slowly but surely on the path to finding her Mr. Right.

Derek and Meredith found it hard to establish their relationship at the beginning due to Derek's marriage to Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) so much so that they even broke up. In one of the best seasons of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith tries to get over Derek by meeting with and having a one-night stand with Steve (Sunkrish Bala). However, it's a near nightmare scenario when Steve shows up at the hospital the next day with priapism, which is when the male member is stiff without stimulation.

Things gradually get more and more humiliating for Meredith as Derek is called in to perform surgery on Steve. In order to cure Steve's priapism, Derek has to remove a tumor from Steve's spine. This encounter is nothing less than a disaster, and thankfully, Steve is never seen nor mentioned again.

From the pilot, George (TR Knight) is deeply infatuated with Meredith. He has the clich schoolboy crush on his new friend, taking pride whenever Derek lets her down and tries to offer a comforting shoulder with the hope she will see that he is everything she deserves and more.

When Meredith is heartbroken over Derek, she turns to George for a drunken night of awkward, regrettable passion or lack thereof. It backfires miserably on George and makes for an extremely uncomfortable encounter after Meredith starts sobbing uncontrollably. Despite George growing a little hostile towards her in the aftermath, they eventually make up and stick to being what they know best: friends. Sadly, George never found the love of his life, with him exiting the show in Season 5.

How I Met Your Mothers unlucky with loves own, Josh Radnor, has a minor guest-starring role in Season 15 as Meredith Grey's love interest. He and Meredith have a run-in with each other on a blind date set up for other people. They hit it off with Meredith rescheduling her entire day to spend more time with John after sensing something may be there.

That decision alone is a huge deal for her considering how in demand she is at the hospital and her recent misfortune with love. Blissful ignorance is soon shattered though when John reveals he has no interest in children and unintentionally insults Meredith. John is one match Meredith finds herself desperate to diffuse, and thankfully, she quickly moves on to find someone better.

Fans may recall William (Scott Elrod) as Merediths rebound of sorts in Season 12. He senses there could be something worth pursuing, and they go on a few dates. They first met when they were both assigned to Brian Carson (Brett Zimmerman), who was ridden with osteosarcoma. The two easily hit it off, especially since William's charm is hard to resist.

They went on several dates, with them even sleeping together. However, Meredith had a panic attack the morning after and screamed at William to leave since she didn't think that she was ready to pursue love. The thing about William is that hes not an awful person. He is patient with Meredith, giving her space when she needs it, but he is the classic case of right person, wrong time. Maybe in another life, these two could have worked something out.

Link (Chris Carmack) is unwittingly thrust into yet another of Merediths love triangles, with the new ortho god and Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) battling for her affection. Link proves to be a hit with everyone in the family, including the kids, so much so that Meredith even chooses to start a relationship with him.

With DeLucas Italian charm in his way, the spark between Link and Meredith fizzles out before it can even ignite. While Link is a sweetheart, its hard to imagine things working out with Meredith. The chemistry just isnt there, but he does find his own love story in Grey's Anatomy shortly after, with him starting a family with Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone).

One of Merediths objects of affection is Scott Speedmans renowned charismatic transplant surgeon, Nick Marsh. First appearing in season 14 as a patient, it looked like sparks were going to fly with Meredith, but he is very quickly phased out as soon as hes introduced.

Nick returns in season 18 and finds that the chemistry between him and Meredith is still there. Now, the pair have struck up a long-distance relationship which seems to be going well. A question on many fans' minds is whether they can withstand the test of time, which they did, as it was revealed that Nick followed Meredith to Boston, which sadly meant that Speedman had also exited the show.

Riggs (Martin Henderson) comes onto the series with a lot of baggage nearly enough to rival Merediths if anyones counting. Like the general surgeon, Riggs lost his soulmate and the love of his life, Megan (Abigail Spencer), when she went missing while deployed.

After Dereks death, Meredith opts to avoid romance but falls into an entanglement of complications with Riggs. The two grow closer and closer as Meredith becomes more comfortable in opening herself up to love again. In fact, Meredith makes a symbolic move to tuck away the Post-it that has her and Derek's vows in order to pursue a relationship with Riggs. She and Riggs were looking promising for a hot second until Megan returned.

Following the departure of Justin Chambers fan-favorite Alex Karev, the pediatrics ward was in need of a new surgeon. Merediths best friend and proclaimed person Cristina (Sandra Oh) sends a two-in-one experienced doctor for Grey Sloan and potential love interest for Meredith package with Irishman, Hayes (Richard Flood).

Hayes shares a lot in common with Meredith. Both are widowed, both are single parents, and both are doctors. The pair have a couple of interactions together, but nothing overly flirtatious. Technically, nothing ever does happen between them; however, his entrance is implicated alongside Merediths love life. This could have been the shows next best power couple if they had been able to settle down, but they are plagued by COVID-19 comas and a shock departure when Hayes resigns and exits the series.

Finn (Chris ODonnell) is the first semi-serious relationship Meredith embarks on after Addison arrives and drops a major bombshell, revealing herself as Derek's estranged wife. Derek breaks things off with the leading lady to fix his marriage while Meredith glams it up with the single life.

Finn is one role where Chris ODonnell plays a sweet guy (apart from Robin in the 90's movie Batman and Robin). He dotes on Meredith, despite knowing that her heart ultimately lies with Derek. Of all of her love interests, Finn is maybe one of the few men who is worthy of more than she could give. In hindsight, he never really stands a chance against Derek, but he doesnt deserve to be cheated on especially at a prom he had taken Meredith to.

The romantic pairing of Meredith and DeLuca has been met with a mixed reception from fans. After sharing a brief smooch drunkenly on DeLucas part the Italian stud falls head over heels for his attending and spends the first half of Season 15 making grand, swoon-worthy gestures towards her.

DeLuca is nothing but considerate, respectful, and selfless around Meredith. He always puts her and her kids first. The resident is even willing to go to prison to protect her, and theyd only been dating for a short while at that point. Despite breaking up, Meredith and DeLuca are still there for one another and clearly share a lot of love. Sadly, their romance is not meant to be when DeLuca is fatally stabbed. However, they do share one last moment on the purgatory beach where they find closure for their short-lived relationship.

While this dynamic duo has their ups and downs with each other, Derek and Meredith have been the "it" couple of Grey Sloan for a whole decade. From the moment they met, there was an electrifying spark that they both couldn't deny. Sure, their relationship could be pretty unhealthy at times, but they stood by one another through it at all.

Derek is Merediths greatest love and theres no question about it. Their romance is a whirlwind from the very first episode. Theyve been on quite the journey. Tackling ex-wives, various love triangles, and gut-wrenching tragedies, it seems nothing could ever come between them until Dereks devastating death. Yet, years down the line, Meredith still considers him her McDreamy.

Station 19 Series Finale’ Subtle Grey’s Anatomy Callback Made It Even Better – Screen Rant

Warning! SPOILERS for Station 19 season 7, episode 9 ahead.

The Station 19 two-part series finales starting point in season 7, episode 9 included the last calm moments before the storm Station 19's firefighters will face, making a connection to Grey's Anatomy and Station 19's history with two subtle details. Knowing Station 19 season 7 would be the last let the firefighting drama dedicate it to wrapping up all protagonists storylines, giving apt conclusions to their multiple-season journeys. Station 19 season 7, episode 9 continued doing so, calling back to distinctive Greys Anatomy and Station 19 moments in the few pauses Station 19's firefighters had to decompress while fighting wildfire.

The strong link between Station 19 and Greys Anatomy was evident from the multiple cross-over episodes that started and will conclude Station 19 with season 7, episode 10, happening throughout the firefighting drama and Greys Anatomys last seven seasons. While characters appearing in both Shondaland shows always kept the connection open, Station 19 rarely implemented in its story things part of the medical dramas history so iconic that they became synonymous with Greys Anatomy. Still, thats what Station 19 season 7, episode 9 did with one blink-and-you-miss-it reference dropped during Travis and Vics fight en route to the campaign fire.

Station 19 is ending with season 7, but Grey's Anatomy's season 21 renewal offers the chance for some characters to cross over to the medical drama.

Station 19 made Vic Crisis One's leader in Station 19 season 7, episode 8 with the project going national, not being funded anymore by the SFD, thus solving its budget problem, but causing Vic to move away from Seattle as a result. This made Station 19 season 7, episode 9 devoted to breaking the news to the team and Travis in particular, as he had been not only Vics roommate for years but also her best friend, and one not particularly good with change.

Vic and Travis fighting over Traviss reaction to the news, which centered on Traviss feelings instead of Vics, showed how even that change was discussed in Travis and Vics peculiar way of handling massive transformations. However, in calling out Traviss selfish reaction, Vic called Travis her person, using Cristina and Merediths typical nickname for each other in Greys Anatomy. Travis and Vic never referred to themselves as one anothers person in Station 19, making the spur-of-the-moment moniker a direct connection to Greys Anatomy and its indelible link to Station 19, symbolized by Vic and Traviss friendship resembling Cristina and Merediths.

Indeed, while Meredith and Cristina as a duo never interacted with Travis and Vic, the two firefighter best friends embodied the doctors distinctiveness in Station 19. Although bright and cheery compared to Greys Anatomys twisted sisters and given their usual attitude to make things more bearable by making fun of them, Vic and Travis too had a bond unlike any other in Station 19. This made the firefighter duo and the centrality of their unique friendship the perfect connection to Station 19s parent series, showing the similarities between the two via an iconic nickname inevitably synonymous with Greys Anatomy.

Besides the clear reference to Greys Anatomy, Station 19 season 7, episode 9 also managed to hint at a memorable yet heartbreaking Station 19 season 2 moment. Vic and Travis choosing to sleep on the top of the fire engine and being joined by Ben, Maya and Andy indeed mirrored the Station 19 team doing the same to support Vic after her boyfriend and SFD chief Lucas Ripley died in Station 19 season 2, episode 15. The two moments greatly differed in the feelings involved, but they both highlighted the close bond and support among the firefighters in Station 19.

Vic needed Station 19s support to withstand losing Lucas, face the funeral, and deal with the rest of SFD learning about her romantic relationship with the fire chief in Station 19 season 2. Through Vics painful story arc, Station 19 season 2, episode 15, Always Ready showed how death being behind the corner was the reason why firefighters were so close, especially those at Station 19. While the moment in Station 19 season 7, episode 9 was lighter, the shot from above highlighting Station 19s closeness nonetheless indicated the severe wildfire-related challenges ahead in Station 19 season 7, episode 10.

Station 19 season 7, episode 9s connections to Greys Anatomy and Station 19 put the topic of family at the front and center of the firefighting dramas series finale. The found family trope had always been important in Greys Anatomy because the time spent by the doctors at the hospital effectively made the medical dramas central characters each others family. However, Station 19 made it even more central because of the many friendships linking those at the firehouse and how Pruitt Herrera had built that team to work, fight, and protect each other as if they were family.

The final episode of Grey's Anatomy season 20 has been given a meaningful title that might connect to a big moment in the Station 19 series finale.

Every frequent Greys Anatomy viewer remembers the first time the show made them cry. For legacy fans of 20 iconic seasons, including yours truly, the above image alone is quite triggering (RIP, MAGIC. If you know, you know).

Ive lost track of how many times Greys has left me weeping; an early season two episode featuring a train crash, a hospital shooting, numerous character deaths, and more recently, a season 20 installment in which two doctors treat a prisoner with cancer all come to mind. Its safe to say the whole team are experts at dialing up the misery by now, and its rarely by accident. Current series showrunner Meg Marinis confirms the writers have a specific approach to ensure the long-running ABC show maintains its emotional high after all this time.

The A.V. Club conducted a roundtable interview with Marinis and four cast membersJames Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, and Camilla Luddingtonearlier this month at SeriesFest, an annual TV festival in Denver that celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024. During the chat, I asked Marinis how Greys still manages to induce plenty of tears when you least expect it. The showrunner, who started as a writers PA in 2006 and has climbed the ladder since season two, immediately and proudly nodded. She says they have a three-step approach to their formula in the writers room. (Do you really? Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson, is shocked to hear it.)

Weve always said the perfect Greys Anatomy scene has medicine, obviously, it brings laughs, and theres a huge emotional component to it, Marinis says. When drafts are turned in, were all looking at them, and often, someone says that we need to keep twisting the knife somewhere because Im not crying yet.

That explains season 20's sixth episode (which aired on May 2) in which cardiac surgeon Dr. Teddy Altman (Raver) and intern Dr. Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) get attached to a patient whose cancer diagnosis was delayed because he was behind bars. At this stage, they cant do anything for him, which is sad enough. Then, as hes being taken back to jail, Yasuda runs up to him and offers him a piece of cake from his high school cafeteria. Its the last thing he remembers eating and enjoying before he was sent away the last time. Cue the tears.

The arc is also reminiscent of the season five episode, Sympathy For The Devil, which aired all the way back in January 2009. In it, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) shows compassion for a serial killer on death row. Marinis agrees nostalgia is a handy Greys Anatomy tool, and the show keeps wielding it to make longtime fans cry on demand.

Im so glad were back to in-person table reads, too, because you cant capture the feeling on Zoom of two actors being able to turn in this emotional performance, she adds. I look around the room at the cast, the PAs, and others who are watching and notice if their mouths turn up or if theyre shocked and teary. The directors and actors elevate what we put in our script. We give them a blueprint, but they take it 10 steps ahead. And then, editorial and post-production work dials it up, too. McKidd, who has been playing Dr. Owen Hunt since season five and has directed 40 episodes, chimes in to add they do their part as best they can, but if it isnt on the page, it wont be on the stage.

Marinis also teases the upcoming finale, airing on May 30. I watched it last night in my hotel room and started weeping. And then I remember thinking, Oh, I never thought this is the scene that would cause this. So we have the formula but it also sneaks up on us, she says. Brace yourselves, Greys viewers; even in its whopping 20th (!) season, the show is ready to cause a breakdown.

Grey’s Anatomy Delivered the Greatest Star Wars Reference of All-Time – CBR

Summary

Nearly 50 years into its existence, Star Wars is deeply embedded into pop culture around the world. Popular movies and TV shows have parodied and referenced it over and over for decades now. Surprisingly, the long-running ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy once included an entire monologue referencing a galaxy far, far away so specifically that it may have gone completely over casual fans' heads. It's such a deep cut that only someone familiar with the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now called Legends) could have written it. Does this mean it remains one of the greatest pop culture references of all time?

Many pop culture fans will know the most commonly referenced lines and events from Star Wars over the years. The iconic "I am your father" moment was parodied by Disney long before the company owned the Star Wars franchise. Star Wars books are a more niche offshoot of the fandom, however. While there are hundreds of novels and far more comic book issues, the vast majority of those familiar with Star Wars have not read them. This is what makes Grey's Anatomy's Season 4 reference even more impressive -- whoever wrote the monologue had to have been a huge fan of the franchise.

The show referenced dozens of Star Wars books, actually, if you count how many books the Solo children appear in. A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, a 2008 Grety's Anatomy episode featured a Star Wars-specific monologue that got more niche as it progressed. In Season 4, Episode 16, "Freedom, Part 1," an emergency situation arises when a teenager is brought in encased in concrete. "I'm like Han Solo. In Star Wars?" the patient, Andrew, tells Dr. Miranda Bailey as a surgical team slowly removes concrete pieces and begins treating burns on his skin. As he becomes more embarrassed about jumping into cement to impress a girl, his heart rate shoots up, which is dangerous in his situation. Bailey, therefore, tries to calm him down by talking to him, remembering his mention of Han Solo, and attempting to reassure him that he's not a loser just because he made one dumb mistake. Han Solo freezing in carbonite, she says, is not the end for him. The following monologue ensues:

"Uh, Andrew! Andrew, hey! Hey! Listen to me. HAN SOLO IS NOT A LOSER. Han Solo got encased in carbonite, and that was a big mess, but thats not what hes remembered for. Hes remembered as the guy who made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs and who braved the sub-zero temperatures of the ice planet Hoth in order to save someone he cared about from the big ugly Wampa. Hes remembered as the guy who swooped down at the last minute, blasted Darth Vader out of the sky so that Luke could use the Force andand destroy the damn Death Star! Ok? Princess Leia saved him from the carbonite and they fell in love, and they saved the universe and had twin Jedi babies that went on to save the universe again. Right? Now thats the whole picture. The carbonite was just a piece. Ok?"

Several members of the surgical team pause to look at Bailey questioningly when Andrew's heart rate slows to normal and her monologue finishes, as if surprised that a medical doctor would know anything about Wampas and the Kessel run from Solo: A Star Wars Story. She replies defensively to the room: "What? I like science fiction!" So does the writer responsible for the above monologue, apparently -- and they must like Star Wars specifically in order to have referenced Han and Leia's twins, who only ever appeared in books and never on-screen. Thankfully, when writers write TV episodes, they get credited for those episodes so that anyone who might want to dig deeper into their science fiction interests could theoretically do so.

The episode's writer is none other than Grey's Anatomycreator Shonda Rhimes, which raises an important question: Is Rhimes a Star Wars fan? She's actually a "huge" fan, according to a 2015 post on X (formerly Twitter) promoting a special look at Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens on ABC. Whether or not Rhimes has read a plethora of Star Wars Legends books remains a mystery. However, Bailey's deep-cut monologue had to have at least been fact-checked or filled out by someone in that writer's room, whether Rhimes originally included the Legends reference or not. It just goes to show that when a Star Wars fan becomes a highly successful individual in their industry, they not only have the opportunity to weave references to their favorite franchise into their work -- they'll do it, too.

In fact, there are a number of Star Wars references throughout the series, such as Season 5, Episode 18, "Stand By Me," when Derek Shepard tells Meredith Grey he loves her, and she replies, "I know." Keeping with continuity, having established Bailey as a fan of Star Wars early on in the series, most of the references come from her character throughout the seasons. Unfortunately, as Rhimes became less directly involved with the series in later seasons, the frequency of Star Wars references has also significantly decreased. It is possible that Krista Vernoff, who ran the show until Season 20, wasn't as big of a science fiction fan as Rhimes. With a new showrunner steering the ship, more Star Wars references could make a grand return to the show.

It's not at all uncommon for movies and TV shows to reference Star Wars directly or indirectly in their scripts. Characters might make lightsaber noises, quote famous lines, or dress up in costume as characters for Halloween or other occasions. It's not as common for a medical drama, for example, to reference even such a well-known fictional universe, especially one set in the real world decades after the movie that started it all was released. It is much more feasible now, however, as fans who grew up with Star Wars are getting older, becoming more successful, and finding ways to incorporate their fandom -- in big ways and small -- into their work seen by audiences of millions.

Han Solo is a well-known Star Wars character, whether you've seen all the movies or just snippets of the original trilogy. Grey's Anatomy's reference to the character is the best in pop culture history because of the book reference alone. If a viewer had only seen the movies and TV shows, they wouldn't have known about the Solo twins or their efforts to save the galaxy as Jedi. Thankfully, the person responsible for creating Grey's Anatomy just so happens to like Star Wars as well. Dr. Bailey was right, of course: Heroes are best remembered by their most impressive achievements, such as Rhimes sneaking a Star Wars book reference into a hugely popular primetime network television show.

Betsy Beers knows not to doubt the power of Greys Anatomy after 20 seasons.

The Shondaland executive producer, whos worked on the Shonda Rhimes-created medical drama from day one, reflected on the shows ability to stand up strong through many changes in its history. By the end of its landmark 20th season later this month, Greys will become the longest-running drama series in ABC history. With spin-off series Station 19 ending this spring, Greys will return for Season 21 as the sole Shondaland-produced series on the broadcast network the first time it stands alone since the premiere of Private Practice in 2007.

When asked about the possibility of more Greys spin-offs, Beers admitted the short answer is who the hell knows? She added that the Ellen Pompeo-led drama series benefits from an endless stream of medical stories and a beloved cast of characters that audiences love to watch grow while growing with them.

But come back and tell me, what do you think we should do as a spin-off? Beers asked during an interview with TheWrap as she celebrated Greys Anatomy at SeriesFest this past weekend (That offer will be taken up when we have more than 10 minutes to chat).

Regardless, the show hardly struggles with holding audience interest on its own. The Season 20 premiere garnered 10 million viewers across platforms within 35 days of release, according to data provided by ABC. Greys also frequently lands in Nielsens Top 10 report of viewership across streaming, as its multigenerational fanbase flocks to Hulu and Netflix to watch episodes again and again.

Beyond the Greys Anatomy universe, Beers has had a hand on every television series produced by Shondaland from watercooler ABC dramas Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder, to Netflix hits like Bridgerton and Inventing Anna, created under Shondalands headline-making overall deal at the streamer. At SeriesFest, Beers was honored with the Impact in Television Award, alongside Shondaland and its flagship series, for trailblazing storytelling that changed what audiences expect from programming across broadcast and streaming.

Beers spoke with TheWrap about the legacy and longevity of Greys Anatomy, the end of Station 19, collaborating with Netflix and how Shondaland has raised a new generation of Hollywood creatives.

TheWrap: How does it feel to look back on 20 years of revolutionary television?

Beers: I cant believe 20 years have gone by I am incredibly lucky because I am able to only work on things that I absolutely love. Im proud that weve been able to accomplish all that we have accomplished, the way that the companys been growing and the different forms of storytelling that are now available to us.

Every once in a while Ill look back and think about, What is the best way to put your story out there in terms of promotion? And I think about Scandal and live tweeting, what a big deal that was when Twitter was all there was. Look at how the worlds changed and the climate has changed. But theres also this consistent narrative for me, which is that we have been lucky enough to continue to figure out ways of telling stories that we love.

More than an industry-changing show, Greys and Shondaland have grown into a remarkable talent incubator for people to develop skills as actors, directors, producers and more. How did mentorship become such a big pillar in the companys mission?

It was always in the DNA. Both Shonda and I look at it as common sense. The best thing you can do in the world is to find people who love what you do, and with whom you can share the information you have, so that they can grow and rise up. Weve been lucky enough to mentor so many people whove decided to stay in the company that weve ended up benefiting from the time that we all spent together as they were moving up.

It just makes everything better when you give people opportunities, particularly people who might not have had opportunities otherwise There are so many benefits to watching people then go off in the world and create their own shows and do their own work.

So much of leadership is about creating an environment where people can learn, where theyre not scared to say how they feel, where they feel supported and protected. Thats something as a producer I feel incredibly proud of, and I think its incredibly important. Its one of the things I always try to pass on.

Netflix has been an exceptional home for Shondaland so far, producing hit after hit. As Hollywood faces this moment of contraction and frugality, have you noticed any change in the way the streamer responds to the projects youre developing?

We all have to be aware that there is a shift. Obviously, there was a lot of contraction last year. Its up to us as good producers to be mindful of that I always want to make sure that the money we spend is well spent. But I think the main thing is just to stay conscious and focused, and we have a great partnership with Netflix, where they want to continue to tell the stories that we want to tell. And I think its up to us to make sure that we are able to tell stories in a way that I feel is responsible in the climate that demands it.

One of the biggest products of that partnership is Bridgerton, which is now a worldwide phenomenon. Both you and Shonda have said that the plan is to cover all eight books in the series. With Season 3 set to release soon, is there a plan to get all eight installments done at a reasonable time?

Ill quote one of my favorite lines from Anna Delvey and say, It takes as long as it takes. It takes a different amount of time for different stories to be told, and that can be for a number of different reasons external obstacles like weather, strike or COVID. Seasons were delayed because of this horrible world event, and it also can just be about getting the story right.

When we want something to come out in the world, we want to make sure that its exactly what we believe will delight and please the audience. Sometimes that happens fast and sometimes slowly the great thing about Bridgerton is that every single book is a different child and its different. Its a different journey about how one navigates their own sense of self. Theres a happy ending, and then you kick off another season with your favorite characters, but it feels fresh as a daisy.

This year, we say goodbye to Station 19, a decision that came from ABC. Fans have been campaigning hard to try to save the show. Has moving to either a streamer like Hulu or Netflix been in discussion at all, or do you also see this as the end for the series?

People will see that the writers figured out a great way to end the show very elegantly and happily, and I think the fans will be hopefully pleased with that. But I know its rough to watch.

Greys is renewed for Season 21 and remains a key asset for ABC, though now on its own without a spin-off partner once again. What does the future of the Greys universe look like from here?

Its going to look like Greys. The thing about the show is that Greys has always continued to be Greys. But it also constantly transforms itself with characters that come and go, and with the new kinds of stories that can be told. Weve continued to re-energize and repopulate with different characters over the years, which is part of it, but theres also an endless stream of medical stories as medicine in the world changes.

Greys is going to continue to stand up strong.
